I bought a Tesla 12 months ago. Totally understand your concerns about cost, speccing, testing etc. Happy to answer any questions you have. There are plenty of Tesla owners who happily do a lot of miles without issue because of the supercharger network. Generally our household is low mileage 12K a year, the Tesla has changed that 19K by reducing the cost of travelling. When costing out an electric vehicle it is very important to look at cost of ownership comparison not just headline price. If you have a company and can put it through that it has become an absolute no brainer (if anyone in that boat happy to share incite). Model 3 has brought entry cost down but even used Model S is a good option, particularly getting one with Free Supercharging.
I have just got back from a road trip to the South of France in it. It is safe to say that charging is a concern unless you have a Tesla. There is simply no charging infrastructure even close to quality/quantity/speed of charge/ease of use. The public network is getting better fast but currently not close. 2000 mile road trip, not one charging issue, most of time we were not ready to get back on the road before the car was and most relaxing long distance driving I have ever done (Not just Tesla but EVs are relaxing to drive due to the way they deliver power and move the car or regen and stop). We found a lot of places to stay in France with not only Tesla but also other public charges, the Uk is the same but you definately need the Apps like ZAPMAP to find them.

You can't actually fall asleep at the wheel of the Tesla and it still drive, it would throw a fit at you if you don't hold the wheel for 5 secs. Obviously that behaviour is currently illegal, however some people actively get round the Tesla system by adding a weight to the steering wheel to avoid the nagging! Having just done my road trip using autopilot as much as possible, I simply cannot wait for a few niggles to be ironed out and legislation to catch up so I can properly relax and let the car drive whilst I do something else
