You can join but your smart meter won't communicate with PP until it's updated or replaced, which could be a while because the smart meter rollout is in the relatively early stages. I'm not sure how long you'd have to wait for that, you could ask for an estimated time scale.
However...readings once a month is fine (preferably when or just after(up to 2 days) you get the reminder email.
Missing the odd reading is no big deal, the statement will catch up when it gets the real readings at the next statement date. Your direct debit amount won't change unless the statement balance is VERY skewed. Unlikely.
In the interim can someone read the meter for you once a month if you're away?
