• Smart Meter comms

Hello, we are switching to PP and have a question regarding how the meter communicates ‘back to base’. We applied to Eon early on and when they visited said we couldn’t have one because our phone signal was so poor, less than the 30% minimum.

i naively thought that the Government would introduce a web based system but that wasn’t the case at the time but this may have changed?
    Many thanks, J and L

    Hello there,
It depends now on what area of the country you're in. For SMETS2 meters there are two Communication providers - Arqiva in the north and Telefonica in the central & south. Arq use long range radio and Tef use the O2 3G network.

For SMETS1 it depended on the model of meter that was installed, some of them had roaming SIMs so as long as you had a network it was fine. The CSPs for SMETS2 have an obligation to cover 95% of the country so you should be fine.

Whereabouts are you located? The north (which is anywhere north of Manchester) is still behind the C&S regions at the moment in terms of installs.
