Can I have a smart meter?

We’re rolling out our 2nd generation smart meters (generally referred to as ‘SMETS2’).

Installation of these meters is free of charge.

Currently, we’re focusing region by region and have several teams moving around the country to focus on different locations.

For Pure Planet, this has proved the most efficient way to get new meters to as many people as possible with the numbers of engineers we have.

We’ll contact you when there are engineers available in your region, to ask if you’d like electricity, and gas if you’re dual fuel, smart meters installed. We’ll also check your smart meter eligibility - there are a few reasons why you won’t be able to have a SMETS2 meter such as if you’ve got underfloor heating, or night storage heaters. If you have solar panels, we will be able to install SMETS2 meters for you - there’s more info on that here.

If you have a SMETS1 first generation meter, this will be upgraded to the SMETS2 network in 2020.

All our Members will be kept updated with latest progress right here in the Pure Planet Community.

Some Pure Planet Members won't be contacted just yet. These include anyone with non-standard meters, as well as Members who are on the Priority Services Register (because we know that smart meters are not working 100% correctly yet). We're also not installing SMETS2 meters where there's low network coverage.

Update 14 January 2021

Due to tighter restrictions announced in Scotland last night, all non-emergency meter work, including SMETS2 appointments, will be cancelled from Saturday 16 January. This will last for six weeks to start with, pending more announcements on restrictions.

Magnum will be contacting all Members in Scotland affected by this. And, of course, they’ll re-arrange appointments when restrictions are lifted.
