Razors

I think that I may have mentioned somewhere else that the company I've been buying my 'semi-disposable' (i.e. you only replace the head) razors from 'King Of Shaves' has committed to eliminating single-use plastic by 2023.

This got me thinking about how they are returning to the 'old-fashioned' Double-Edged' razor.

Personally, until I bought one to experiment with last week, I'd never used one before.

Any Pure Planet members using Double Edged razors, or even the 'cut-throat' style?

If so, have you any advice you wish to share?

Is the return to the 'good old-days' really going to help that much or will all this extra shaving cream outweigh the benefits?

Yes! Switched to one nearly a year ago and never looked back!! I was a bit worried at the beginning but it is very straightforward to use, so I would definitely recommend it to anybody wishing to cut down on the plastic they produce at home! Great post btw!

For an energy-efficient, as well as the best tasting homemade pizza, invest in a Ferrari G3.. 1.2kW, 400C - Pizza is cooked in approx 3 minutes.. which is 0.06 kWh or 0.82p (ex vat). 4.5 out of 5 star from 2.6k ratings on Amazon Italy.

The only energy advice regarding shaving I have is: Use a stop and fill the sink with just enough warm water to clean the blade. Don’t keep the tap running; that wastes energy. For those seeking to improve their shaving experience, plan your beard shaving immediately after taking a hot shower because it softens the beard and opens the pores. Don’t use hot water but cold to wash your face afterwards; it closes the pores, and cold water will cause your blood vessels to constrict, causing the flow of blood to slow and eventually clot, so any bleeding from minor razor cuts stops faster than with hot water.

You’re welcome. :o

Not sure I can deduce from this thread if the old school single blades v current multi blades are better.

I had a shave in Tunisia, was left traumatised (well taken back), as within a flash the dude with comb and scissors trimmed my eyebrows.

My friend and I went for a shave in Mayfair before going out for our Festive lunch as part of the days warm up. Its a classic gaff with old black and white photo's and oak panels etc etc - old school stuff even though I'm a peasant. But you arrive sit back looking up at those dodgy white ceiling tiles with greyish flecks plus I had to listen to the barbers personal problems which in the main I'm sympathetic - this was not part of the master plan.

I use a metal handled Gillette mk5 and I find the blades last weeks, if not months. I reckon the time to change blades is when I walk out the bathroom with little bits of toilet paper stuck all over my chin(s).

When I eventually run out of blades I too will try the good old-fashioned single-bladed razor. My grandad used one and he used to sharpen his by wiping them from side to side inside a beer glass with a little water! He only shaved on Sundays, or for weddings and funerals.

The closest shaves I have ever had were at the hands of barbers in Tunisia and Egypt. They used cutthroat razors which took half of a conventional razor blade. As explained to me, they were told to ditch their traditional cutthroat razors for fear of transmitting HIV from customer to customer.

Looks worse than it is, honest 🙂 It's a kind of bomb bay door mechanism (for want of a better description. Load the blade in the top and twist the bottom to close the doors.

The benefit for me of being adjustable is you can change how harsh the blade cuts from 1-Really mild to 9-Really really aggressive!

Badger brushes rock!
See @Bev @woz it's a real thing ;))
Well, after much research and discussion in various places online - I eventually went for a Double Edged razor set from Mutiny Shaving, not the cheapest, but the handle for the razor and brush are made from recycled skateboards by Joey Goldstraw of Skate Reclaim Create, and Mutiny don't believe in excess packaging. So I'm sticking to my principal of trying to reduce my unnecessary plastic waste - trust me the amount of it Kate goes through in Tonic Water bottles, I need to do something.

I use a double edge razor, an old Gillette Adjustable that I got off eBay.

Blades used vary from Feathers (really sharp but tend to blunt quickly), Derby, Gillette Black, Nacette.....loads of different ones out there to try!
