Would you buy a pair of ‘vegetable’ trainers made of corn, bean oil and cotton?

Reebok has started selling the unisex shoes, described as being ‘chalk’ coloured.

The sole is made from corn, the insole from castor bean oil, and the upper from cotton.

Most trainers are made from oil-based rubber and synthetic materials including ‘foam’ from vinyl acetate.

Of course sustainable trainers are already available from smaller brand names, such as Veja.

Would you spend a bit extra for shoes made from sustainable materials? Tell the community in the replies and vote in our poll.

I really adore branded sneakers, and not because I’m 14 😉 but because I truly think you need specific footwear for specific activities, and yes you can get by with one pair, but feet are too too precious, so wear the correct shoes IMO. Brands are good 🆙

HOWEVER, saying that, these are better than ok, and above all, rather unique. Anything unique is awesome IMO so I’d deffo give them a go for one summer (cos thats all they’d last, I’m certain) purely for fashion, (and the story behind their making), and not for too much activity.

But for some reason, every time I look at them, I just can’t help thinking “Joanna Lumleys improvised espadrilles made from that tit sling whilst filming on a dessert island!” :D:D;)

Not had trainers for years, I'm not allowed them anymore by the boss 😞

Regularly wash my sneakers on a 40 degree washing cycle, but due to Corona gate, risked a 60 degree! That’ll be the end of the sneakers then 😢😂😂😂😂!

Win-win then if they're made from corn bean oil you can have them cooked for your next meal!

Are you allowed to call her that to her face? Kate gets seriously upset if I say 'yes Boss.'

Mind you, Kate also gets upset if say 'no.'

Bit random, but has anyone heard of / tried WIGGLES trainers or footwear? 🤷‍♀️

Never heard of them, but had a pop up whilst playing my word games late late late last night, so visited website. Great reviews and seem genuine and reasonable, so surprised hadn’t heard of them. Not usually a fan of adverts via apps, but these did sound good. Do need sneakers, and like trying new brands, but only if going to be good for my precious 👣.

Hey @Bev, I haven’t heard of them before! Did they look like they have eco credentials at all?

I know that vegan sneakers have been increasing in popularity of the last few years (thanks to one brand in particular) :eyes:

I didn’t get a good feel in the end Nat, so altho I bought an unbranded pair this time, I used the PP Amazon voucher, and these ARE vegan ya beauty! By chance, but what a bonus! 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏

I’ve heard of ‘The Wiggles’ and I’ve heard of ‘Wiggle it’ - somehow I think it’s neither of them, and now, feeling extremely old, I shall go for a reminisce.

You’ve bought some vegan trainers with PP vouchers? Oh @Bev that’s brilliant. You know that if I mention this to our marketing team they’ll want to arrange interviews with the media about it.  It would be fame at last!

I noticed tho, when I looked back, it was in a review that said they were vegan. I think they are, but can’t seem to find anything in the actual official write up 🤷‍♀️. Are vegan shoes quite rare then, and ultra expensive? Is it likely these aren’t?

Oh yes, it brings them up when I do an Amazon search of vegan trainers 👍👍👍👍👍👍. Great, they are!

I don’t think they’re necessarily really expensive @Bev as there’s a really wide range of synthetic materials that can be used nowadays! You’ll have to let us know how they are/ send a pic when they arrive!

Not worn them outside yet Nat, but feel super comfy. First time ever bought a no brand, but really liked these 👍👏.

Stop larfing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣mmmmmm THEY look comfy!

@Bev

In my opinion, big name brands are a waste of money, as mainly you are paying extra for the name.

It will be interesting further down the line if you can do a comparison of these no brand and your usual brand trainers to see which gives the best value for money

Concrete proof that google’s not spying on me (honest, guv), this appeared in my Gmail ads today:

Oh, and ‘Wiggles’ are part of the company which owns Chain Reaction Cycles.
